DARREN COGGAN heads the list of finalists in 2017 for The 21st Southern Stars – The Australian Independent Country Music Awards. Darren scored four finalist nominations while ALEYCE SIMMONDS and ALLAN CASWELL each have three finalist spots in a year that has a total of 22 artists and groups, as finalists, in the eight judged categories.
Darren’s nominations include The Wide Horizon in Single and Male Vocalist, The Wide Horizon in Album and InAsMuch in Heritage Track of the Year.
Darren and Allan are head to head in Album of the Year, Heritage Track of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
Allan three finalist berths were 50 Years in Oz in Album of the Year, Lefty O’Reilly in Heritage Track of the Year and Hero Just The Same in Male Vocalist. Defeated secured two nominations for Aleyce in Single and Female Vocalist with
More Than Meets The Eye picking up an Album of the Year nomination for her. TANIA KERNAGHAN, JEFF GIBSON and SANDRA HUMPHRIES are also multiple finalists with two nominations apiece.
“We received nominations from 82 individual artists and groups,” said Awards Coordinator John Arnold. “In the eight judged categories there was a mix of well established artists together with some outstanding emerging talent,” he said.
“Many of the 22 finalists have already achieved significant chart success with radio singles over the past year,” Mr Arnold emphasised, “and many have also released very successful new recorded product in the last 12 months.”
“The Festival plays a major role in fostering independent Australian country music talent I would like to congratulate all the nominees for the 2017 Southern Stars awards.”

Tickets are now available for the Awards presentation and concert – the Festival’s gala event – on Saturday October 7th at the Mercy Theatre, St Joseph’s College. The awards evening, co-hosted by ALEYCE SIMMONDS and DAVE PRIOR features an impressive list of performers including TOYOTA STARMAKER RACHAEL FAHIM, TAYLOR PFEIFFER, ALLAN CASWELL, KIM RITCHIE, THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT, REG POOLE, BRYEN WILLEMS, HAYLEY MARSTEN, STEPHEN R CHENEY, PAT DRUMMOND AND PAUL GIBBS with more to be added to the gala show.
The 2017 festival will be staged from September 29th to October 8th with over 70 artists performing over the 10 days at 27 separate venues.
