DARREN COGGAN NEW SINGLE RELEASE

Too Dark For The Light Horse (Too Light For The Clan)

"Too Dark For The Light Horse (Too Light For The Clan)" marks the welcome return to the Australian Country Music scene for singer, songwriter, and actor, Darren Coggan. This is the first single to be lifted from Darren's moving album "War Stories"

In the wake of the recent ‘sorry speech’ by the Australian Government to the indigenous peoples of this land, Darren’s new single recognises a blemished chapter in our nation's military history and the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people within the armed forces.

Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders have served with distinction in all of our major wars. They would fight for a country that discriminated against them badly. In the armed forces, Aboriginal soldiers were only paid a third of the wage of a white soldier. Many Aboriginal soldiers and pilots who distinguished themselves during the war returned home to find that nothing had changed. Despite such discrimination, our Aboriginal brothers joined the armed forces in droves. They were fighting a bigger battle, to belong as Australians. However, for many individuals, joining the white mans fight often put them at odds with their own tribes and clans.

“Many of the songs on this album present the war experiences of those sidelined by the bronzed male ANZAC mythology, such as women and Aboriginals. Many of the songs are inspired simply by the emotional context. The focus of the album was to present both small and personal stories in the overall context of Australian’s at war over time, from the Boer War through to the latest terrorist threat. The songs have been written about interesting characters from mostly small and personal stories, footnote-like, that are outside the big, simple mainstream history of Australian’s at War” commented Darren.

1996 Toyota Star Maker, Darren was awarded his first Golden Guitar in 2001. He was awarded Australian Independent Male Vocalist of the year at the 2003 Australian Independent Country Music Awards and most recently played the lead role in the world premiere of John Williamson’s Australian folk musical, ‘Quambatook’. On Darren’s new album, “War Stories”, he continues to reflect and celebrate who we are as a nation through his music

Released to radio on NFS #121, country singles.
